Auspicious Alternative
to a Wedding Wine –
RÉMY MARTIN
1989
Everyone has had the
traditional red or
white wine at a wedding dinner. Sound
boring to you? Choose
something different—
go against the norm
and rather than opting
for the expected, why
not serve your guests
something a little
different? We suggest
Rémy Martin 1989. Its
flavor is intense on the
palate, with notes of
ripe fruit. Its heady
aromas reveal notes
of clove and fig, making it wonderfully
complex on the nose,
while revealing a
masterful use of oak.
Rémy Martin 1989
is a premier vintage
cognac sure to satisfy
the taste buds of even
the pickiest connoisseurs among your
wedding party.
Want to know more? Here’s the scoop on
Rémy Martin 1989, the first single-harvest
cognac released in the United States since
Rémy Martin 1965:
During the 1989 vintage, nature delivered
its best throughout Cognac’s most sought
after Grande Champagne vineyards. The
hot summer days combined with cool
nights to allow for ideal maturation of
the Ugni Blanc grapes. The conditions promised elegant, concentrated
wines and following distillation,
eaux-de-vie with remarkable ageing
potential.
Vincent Géré, Director of Rémy
Martin vineyards, remembers the
exceptional year, “out of all other
vintages, 1989 was the one we felt
was most promising. I remember
when visiting our best Grande
Champagne plots with the
vineyard managers, the distiller and the cellar master,
we were all convinced that
the year would be a memorable one.”
All that was required was
the hand and patience of
man to leverage this beautiful harvest, transforming it
into a great cognac. Such a
great year deserved special
attention. Georges Clot,
Rémy Martin cellar master at
the time, strove to select the
best plots from over a thousand exclusively
located in Grande Champagne vineyards.
Combining intuition, experience and
know-how, his aim was to select only the
eaux-de-vie with exceptional ageing potential and a unique aromatic profile. In the
end, he only chose eaux-de-vie from four
estate-owned plots.
After 18 years of ageing in Limousin
oak barrels, kept separately in a dedicated Rémy Martin cellar, the House’s
expectations were confirmed. At the
annual tasting in 2007, current cellar
master Pierrette Trichet felt that Rémy
Martin 1989 was reaching its peak. Its
texture is smooth in the mouth, with
enticing aromas of fig and cloves and a
very fruity palate. The length has the
classic characteristics of Rémy
Martin’s Grande Champagne
cognacs. Having reached 45%
abv, Rémy Martin 1989 is opulent and intense. With this
cognac, the memory of a great
harvest is intact.
Rémy Martin 1989 has confirmed Georges’ intuition. This is
a rare occurrence: the first vintage produced by a major
cognac House in four decades.
With this single-harvest cognac,
Rémy Martin signs an exceptional vintage, a great terroir, and
unique know-how. Such is the
secret of this great vintage.
